Words September 2025 Week 2

20-20 vision means you can see at 20 feet what the average person sees at 20 feet. (In everyday English this means you have good eyesight.)

They are having an end of summer sale on electric fans. (Recently it seems that Japan has only two seasons – summer and winter.)

The Ukraine volleyball team is ranked 17 internationally, and Japan is ranked fifth. (The Japan-Netherland match was a nail-biter.)

In volleyball, the preliminary rounds decide which teams will move up to the finals. (During the finals, teams that lose are eliminated from the tournament.)

I bought a wading pool for my grandchildren. (Wading pools are very shallow so you can only wade [walk] in the water and cannot swim.)

Whisk two eggs. (You can use a whisk or a fork.)

I sifted the dry ingredients. (Sifting flour breaks up clumps, incorporates air to make the flour lighter and fluffier, and ensures even distribution of other dry ingredients.)

I grated two carrots. (You can do this by hand, but using a grater is easier.)

Ripe bananas are very sweet. (When the banana skin turns black, it is very ripe.)

DNR stands for “do not resuscitate.” (This means do not restart a person’s heart if it stops.)

CPR stands for “cardiopulmonary resuscitation.” (This means to restart the heart and breathing of a person.)

I got my second shingles vaccination. (The second vaccination is about six months after the first one.)
We had a soft ice cream cone. (Don’t say “soft cream.”)

It had a mild taste. (The flavor was not strong.)

I had much free time. (“Free time” is not countable, so do not say “many free time.”)

Our cat lives outside now. (The cat loves it freedom.)

My grandparents’ house had an outhouse. (An outhouse is a toilet inside a tiny building outside of the house.)

The cat hissed at the child. (When cats are angry, they make a hissing sound.)

I need to buy an adapter for using my phone recharger in Europe. (European electrical outlets have a different design than the western ones.)

The rainwater wouldn’t drain from the gutter. (Gutters catch rainwater flowing down the roof.)

We unclogged the downspout. (The downspout is the pipe from the gutter to the ground, and you can say “unplugged” instead of “unclogged.”)

They held a disaster preparedness training. (We cannot prevent disasters.)

I felt a little dizzy. (This was caused by an ear infection.)
