Words September 2024 Week 1

It was a very winding road. (The road was windy. The (i) is pronounced like (eye). If you pronounce it like “in” it means the air is moving quickly.)

We bought a talisman at the shrine. (We also call these “good luck charms.”)

I pulled many weeds. (“I removed the weeds” is ok but sounds a little formal.)

I removed the mesh net. (This netting helps prevent weeds from growing.)

Most of my neighbors are widows or widowers. (The widow’s husband dies and the widower’s wife died.)

The eggs are about one-third the size of a normal egg. (It was a type of chicken.)

The rice shortage was caused by lower harvests due to hot weather and water shortages, increased consumption during the Obon holidays and the record numbers of foreign tourists. (The new rice harvest is happening now, so we should have plenty of rice soon.)

We ran out of rice, but we were lucky because a relative sent us some rice as a summer gift. (They ate all of the rice in their house, but they got a rice sample box of several types of rice.)

Researchers in Japan have developed a software system for detecting crosswalks that may help the blind when crossing streets. (This app is in a pair of glasses that tells the person there is a crosswalk in front of them.)

I tried to read braille, but it seems so difficult. (You can learn basic braille in a few months, but it might take more than a year to be fluent.)

The parts of a corn planter are the stalk, ear, husk, silk, kernel, and cob. (General MacArthur smoked a corncob pipe.)

I use used teabags to clean and remove odors from my microwave oven. (Microwave the teabag and the steam will help you clean the walls of the microwave.)

You must squeeze out the liquid from the teabag. (You remove the water by pinching it.)

The doctor said that he doesn’t know the cause of the problem. (In conversation, you shouldn’t say, “The doctor said, ‘I don’t know the cause of the problem.’”)

I heard water dripping. (Water was flowing from the ceiling.)

Does he have a dehumidifier? (This machine removes moisture from the air.)

Watermarks were first made in Italy in 1282. (Watermarks help prevent counterfeiting money, stamps, etc.)

The doctor x-rayed my back. (They took a picture of the bones in her back.)

There are many possible causes for the pain. (She has had back pain for many years, and they are still looking for what caused it.)

The typhoon is moving slowly. (When a typhoon moves slowly over the water, the wind gets stronger.)

My wife texted me. (She sent me a text message, a.k.a. SMS, or short mail.)

Maybe my lack of sleep causes my high blood pressure. (Her blood pressure is about normal now.)

A hologram is a 3D image of something that looks real. (They have made holograms of famous actors and singers who have passed away.)
