Fertilizer makes the soil fertile. (Fertilizer makes the soil able to give life.)

The word “book” is singular, and the word “books” is plural. (Verbs are also singular and plural.)

She had general anesthesia for the surgery. (With general anesthesia, the body is “sleeping” but with local anesthesia, only a small area feels no pain.)

Our “glands” produce liquids for different parts of our bodies. (My saliva glands were damaged by the radiation.)

She wanted to escape from her children for a couple of days to relax. (Her husband took care of the kids while she spent time with her mother shopping and eating out.)

The library was remodeled. (It looks like a new building.)

Originally, a hen party was a women-only party before a wedding, but now any women-only party. (In old English the word “hen” described a female from any species.)

She was born in the year of the rabbit. (I was born in the year of the rat, and I am an Aries.)

A clod is a lump of dirt or clay. (The pile of dirt made by a mole is called a molehill.)

The kaido, or hana-kaido, is a crab apple tree that blossoms in spring. (The kaido tree is called the alonia tree in English.)

A living will is a legal document explaining your end-of-life medical care preferences.

 Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order is a specific medical order for doctors to not perform CPR if your heart stops. (Living wills and DNRs are similar, but the DNR is very specific, and the living will in more general.)

I decided not to do it. (Do not say, “I cancelled doing it.”)

The employees were on strike. (They stopped working for higher wages, etc.)

I washed the carpet at a laundromat, a.k.a. coin laundry. (Coin laundries usually have large machines for heavy items.)

Are you a hoarder? (A hoarder is a mental disease where people cannot throw things away. But it can also mean a person who stocks up excessive things, such as when during the pandemic, people were hoarding toilet paper.)

Hino is said to have the most fertile land in the Tama area. (Hino was historically a rice-cultivating center.)

There are several temples and shrines along the Hino waterways. (A waterway is like a canal.)

It is a best-of-seven series. (The Dodgers lost game 1, but there are six more games.)

J-pop singer Hikaru Utada came out as nonbinary in 2021. (They declared themselves gender neutral.)

Bears start hibernating in early December. (They go into their sleep mode during the winter.)
