In the 1600s, Miyakojima residents paid taxes to the Satsuma using Miyako jofu as payment. (Miyako jofu was designated as a Japanese Important Intangible Cultural Property.)

Shin Hanga emerged in Japan in the early 1900s as a revival of ukiyo-e printmaking from the Edo period. (This type of woodblock printing is popular internationally but not well known within Japan.)

Many of us hadn’t seen each other in 52 years, so I didn’t recognize some people. (She didn’t know who they were without looking at their name tags.)

My aunt and cousin live in a nursing home, but they appeared to be in good spirits. (It was hard communicating since they are hard of hearing.)

He was demoted but is coming back now and has a big fan base. (He has many very loyal fans.)
