Words May 2025 Week 4

I cut my hair. (I looked in the mirror and cut my hair myself.)

I got a haircut. (I asked someone to cut my hair.)

I bought it in the year 2000. (She bought it 25 years ago.)

I hope the car stays shiny forever. (She just got her new car.)

When I was pregnant, the baby was in a breech position, or feet facing down. (Her doctor turned the baby around, so its head was facing down.)

Compost nourishes the soil, while fertilizers provide nutrients for the plants. (I compost kitchen scraps all year until I plant new vegetables, then I fertilize them.)

You can compost by simply burying kitchen scraps directly in the soil. (If you have a very large yard, you can make a compost container. My garden is small so I just bury the scraps in my garden.)

The animals stampeded. (The animals suddenly started running in a panic.)

Battleship Island (Gunkanjima), also known as Hashima Island, is an abandoned coal-mining island off the coast of Nagasaki. (From a distance, the island looks like a battleship.)

It is like a ghost town. (All if the buildings are abandoned.)

The Aurora Borealis is also called the Northern Lights. (The farther north you travel, the better you can see the lights.)

A mutual friend of ours lives in Korea. (Ms. A and Ms. C are friends; Ms. B and Ms. C are friends, so Ms. C is a mutual friend to Ms. A and Ms. B.)

They have kept in touch by email. (They live far apart so communicating by email is best.)

“YOLO” stands for “you only live once” and is used justify taking risks, making spontaneous choices, or enjoying life to the fullest. (As we get older, we should do the things that we want to do without worrying about anything.)

We enjoyed reading Tanikawa Shuntaro’s poetry. (They were reading onstage to an audience.)

In 2017 a Japanese driver killed several people because of road rage. (Road rage can include verbal insults, threats, tailgating, honking excessively, cutting off other vehicles, or physical confrontations.)

Drivers are encouraged to install dashcams to record acts of road rage. (Dashcams are very popular now.)
