There was a beautiful view of the grape vineyard from the outdoor hot spring bath. (Grapes grow on vines, so we call that place a vineyard.) Several of my electrical appliances broke. (Mine too.) My hair dryer stopped working. (New ones are quieter and use less energy.) We ate at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. (In most restaurants you must order the sushi from a digital menu.) I ordered much sushi. (My father’s cat was named Sushi.) I ordered a lot of food. (“Food” is not countable so we should say “a lot of” or “a little” food.) I ordered many dishes. (Dish” is countable, so we should say “many” or “few” dishes.) There is a restaurant on the pier. (Piers have tall legs and sit above the water.) A ship docked at the dock. (“Dock” is a verb and noun.) The ship is in the drydock being repaired. (The ship floats into the dock and the water is removed so they can work on the bottom of the boat.) The tumor is malignant. (It has cancer.) Good news, the tumor is benign. (It does not have cancer.)
The school bag is custom-made. (The average price for a “Randoseru” is sixty thousand yen.) I had a toothache. (She had a pain in the back of her mouth.) The dentist will remove a wisdom tooth. (Ouch!) Wisdom teeth emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. (We are more mature and have gained life experience, so we have more wisdom.) I felt sorry for him. (He had to set up a food booth for the Ome festival in the rain.) I emailed him and asked how he was. (Do not say, “… and asked him, ‘how are you doing?’ “) I put some dry ice in the bag. (Ice will become water but dry ice will become a gas.) The icing (frosting) is made with powdered sugar and butter. (Icing and frosting are similar but icing is more like a liquid and frosting you can spread with a knife.) I made a U-turn and went back home. (He realized that he forgot something at home when he was halfway to his destination.) He has a green thumb. (He is good at growing things.) American patients prefer ceramic or porcelain tooth crowns over silver. (Ceramic crowns look more natural, but the silver ones are stronger.)
