My daughter had an appointment with a dermatologist when the earthquake hit. (She was visiting a “skin doctor” when the Great East Japan Earthquake hit in 2011.)

Compulsory education in Japan is from the first to ninth grade. (Compulsory means something is required by law.)

There was a drawbridge. (The bridge goes up and down to let large ships pass by.)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (What is beautiful for one person might not be for another.)

We got together for lunch. (We “gathered” for lunch sounds too formal.)

We had a get-together. (“A get-together” is the noun form of the verb form “got together.”)

I finally met my pen pal face to face. (They met in person.)

The “pen friend" originated in 1919 and "pen pal" in 1931, with "pen pal" being more common. (It’s ok to say “pen friend” but nowadays “pen pal” is more popular.)

 The cover page had a photo of a snowman. (It was on a pamphlet of their school trip.)

He was the PE teacher. (He was the physical education teacher, a.k.a. the gym teacher.)

They brought their own cooking utensils. (For kitchen “tools” we say “utensils.”)

I brought a thermometer so I could check my temperature. (She was worried that she might have caught cold.)

Only I was excited about the spray art. (Her aunt, uncle and cousin were not so interested in the art.)

The heater was broken. (An air conditioner is used for cooling, and a heater is used for heating.)

Apartheid was a system of racial segregation and discrimination. (This took place when White people ruled South Africa.)

“A” team won the game against “B” team. (“A” team beat “B: team.)

My house is messy, so I spend much time looking for things such as my keys, etc. (I always put my keys in the same place so I can find them easily.)

There were a million people in the audience. (There were a million spectators.) (There is only one audience so don’t say “audiences.”)

He was the assistant principal. (He was second in charge of the school.)

He died from heart disease. (There are many technical names for diseases, so you can simply say “heart disease.”)

I heard people talking but I couldn’t understand them. (I can hear people speaking Japanese, but I usually don’t understand what they are saying.)

The free-lunch ticket is good till the end of this month. (Her husband won the ticket at an end-of-year party.)

The price included all-you-can-drink alcohol or soft drinks. (“Free drink” sounds like you don’t have to pay for the drinks at all.)
