Words June 2024 Week 2

Five of us got together for lunch. (They started socializing more after COVID.

She is the interpreter, and I am the interrupter. (Do you get the joke?)

After he was arrested, they took his mugshot. (They took a front view and side view of his face.)

She gave me a makeup pouch. (This has the same pronunciation as the word “ouch.”)

The rosebush has thorns. (Ouch!)

It had been a long time since I went to Shibuya Station. (I went to the station after a long time.)

Piers are rigid and are connected to the ground. (Docks float or partially float.)

I gave her a hand. (I helped her.)

A constituent is being part of a whole, or a component of something. (She was talking about umami, so I thought she meant ingredient.)

She is multilingual. (She speaks several languages.)

I understood why she yelled at her children. (The mother did not look like a nice person.)

She used foul language. (She used bad words.)

I can’t understand why a parent would talk to their child like that. (Me neither.)

Bourbon is about 70 percent corn plus rye, barley or wheat grains for flavor. (“Corn whiskey” is made with only corn.)

(FYI – the word “maize” refers to corn with a high-oil base and is used to make other products such as ethanol, animal feed, plastics etc. The word “corn” describes the vegetable that people eat.)

“Mugi” refers to wheat, barley, rye and oats. (“Komugi” refers to wheat only “ōmugi” refers to barley only, and “raimugi” refers to rye only.)

“On time” means “at the scheduled time”, whereas the phrase “in time” means “before it's too late”. (The train left on time, but I didn’t get there in time, I was late.)

My body is sore, and I am fatigued. (The “u” in fatigued is silent.)

I will display two paintings. (Many paintings will be exhibited at the Central Library in Kabe from Sunday, June 9, to Friday, June 14.)

In golf, the gross score is the actual number of hits, and the net score is gross minus handicap. (A “scratch golfer” is a person with “0” handicap.)
