He was arrested and sentenced to prison for murder. (The word “sentenced” means a judge has formally announced your punishment after you were convicted of a crime.)

After he was released from prison, he was found innocent. (“Found innocent” means “not guilty.”)

They banned the Somalian referee from entering the US. (He was prevented from officiating games in the US.)

I made an appointment with a dermatologist. (She was scheduled to see the bone doctor.)

The consultation and treatment were very inexpensive. (The prescribed medicine was cheaper than the over-the-counter (OTC) medicine that I bought.)

I haven’t heard cicadas chirping recently. (It has been too hot.)

He tried to find his ring. (Don’t say, “he was finding his ring.” He was looking for the ring.)

They disassembled the house and rebuilt it in Hamura. (The old-style house was originally owned by a famous person.)

It is your choice, what do you choose? (“Choice” is a noun and “choose” is a verb.)

He engraves the customers’ names on the umbrella handles. (To engrave means to cut, carve, or etch a design, text, or pattern into the surface of a hard material such as metal, wood, glass, or stone.)

I watched three 10-minute programs on the internet. (They were short but interesting.)

I was underwhelmed with the water fountain show. (It was much smaller than she imagined.)

The skyscraper silhouettes were beautiful. (A silhouette is a dark shape or outline of an object or person seen against a brighter background.)

They served corn on the cob at the barbecue. (The “cob” is the center part of an ear of corn.)

I was browsing books at a bookstore. (She was casually looking at many books.)

There are many excerpts from many famous stories. (An excerpt is a short passage or portion taken from a larger work, such as a book, speech, film, or musical piece.)

I read the excerpts out loud. (To “read to yourself” means to read silently. When reading out loud, other people can hear you.)

I stopped by a supermarket on my way home. (It was raining cats and dogs when she went out of the store – and she went there on a bicycle.)

I visited an acupuncturist and chiropractor. (They can both do wonders getting rid of pain.)

An undergraduate degree is the first level of higher education, such as a bachelor's degree, taken directly after high school. (A postgraduate degree—often called a graduate degree—is advanced education like a master's or doctorate, pursued after completing an undergraduate degree.)
