I had local anesthesia when my tonsils were removed. (Local anesthesia prevents pain only in the area where the surgery is performed.) General anesthesia is used when the body is sleeping during surgery. (I prefer general anesthesia for colonoscopies.) I had to endure the pain for a few days after the operation. (She was able to put up with the pain.) I’m the family cockroach executioner. (Her family members hate cockroaches but also hate killing them.) We divided into two groups and played the ring toss game. (This was a neighborhood adult event.) He immigrated top Japan from South Africa. (He emigrated from the Republic of South Africa.) He is self-employed. (He is his own boss.) Part of my job is to weed around the community center. (I also had to sew the torn curtains in the gym.) Everybody filled out a survey, or questionnaire, after the ceremony. (In this case, it was a seminar, not a ceremony.) A survey collects data, opinions, and feedback from a group of people. (A questionnaire is a list of questions.) I made scalloped potatoes. (This is another name for potato gratin since the sliced potatoes look like scallops.) I parboiled the potatoes. (I partially boiled the potatoes before baking them.) It was a six-tiered wedding cake. (With a layered cake, each layer is the same circumference. With a tiered cake, each layer is smaller than the one below it.) I put two coats of paint on the wall. The old house had several layers of paint. (A coat of paint is the act of application—one full, continuous layer applied to a surface in a single session. A layer of paint refers to the physical buildup of dried paint on that surface over time, which can include multiple coats and even different types of paint.) There are roughly 1,000 to 10,000 stars for every single grain of sand on our planet. (This is a scientific fact.) I’m learning how to use several exercise machines in the gym. (She just became a member of a local gym.) Swallow barium exams are seldomly done for people over the age of 76. (Doctors recommend no colon cancer checks at all after turning 85.) I wore a patch over my left eye after the surgery. (The surgery lasted only about 15 minutes.) The homepage “thetruesize.com” has interactive maps that show the actual size differences between countries. (On a map, Greenland looks bigger than Africa, but Africa is 14 bigger than Greenland.) There were six of us. (There were six members” sounds like an official meeting.) I recognized him quickly even though it had been 50 years since we saw each other. (He rode his motorcycle from Osaka to Tachikawa for the lunch party.) Our goalie had many saves. (The goaltender prevented the opposing team from scoring a goal many times.) Recently, they won two games against Brazil. Recently, they beat Brazil two times. (Don’t say, “they won Brazil.”) I thought that no one in our condo knew about the water problem. (The Shiroyama Water Distribution Station (城山配水所) is located in the Higashioume area. It is located on a higher elevation to ensure sufficient water pressure for the surrounding area.) There are 38 units in our condominium. (Condo units are privately owned and apartments are rented.) The Dead Sea has 10 times more salt than the ocean. (Except for some microorganisms and algae, this saltwater lake is completely devoid of life.) The pacemaker replacement surgery went well. (All’s well that ends well.) |
