Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Major, which translates to "greater dog.” (This is why it is called the “dog star.”)

Washington State has about 880 glaciers, but most of them will disappear by the year 2070. (This will cause severe weather changes as they melt.)

The following words have multiple meanings: bow, row, light, bark, season and many, many more. (You should be able to understand the correct meaning when the word is used in a sentence.)

The Ome Grand Festival has 12 dashi floats. (In the US, floats in a parade look like they are floating.)

These dashi are not used for soup stock. (Samui.)

“Mikoshi” are called “portable shrines.” (They pull the dashi and carry the mikoshi.)

A shrine is a structure or place devoted to a saint, holy person, or deity. (Many shrines are dedicated to special people rather than gods.)

A deity is a supernatural being, typically a god or goddess, that is worshipped in a religion.

A temple is a building for religious worship, especially in religions other than Christianity. (In Japan we say Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple.)

The ballot box is always locked. (A ballot is the form used for voting.)

I felt a cool breeze while sitting in the outdoor hot spring bath. (The onsen can sometimes control the temperature of the bath water.)

The awards presentation will be held in Nagoya on November 6. (The Ome volunteer group Sazanka will receive an award for their volunteer work.)

I showed her how to use the toaster by using gestures. (She was helping a foreign tourist in the hotel’s restaurant.)

Tokyo Skytree is the tallest broadcast tower in the world with a height of 634 meters. (There is a 360-degree view from Skytree’s observations decks.)

It is the third tallest structure. (There are several categories of tallest buildings.)

Osaka Expo offers a wide variety of cuisines with approximately 100 restaurants. (Cuisine means a style of cooking such as Italian cuisine, French cuisine, etc.)

She had to take a dementia test for her driver’s license. (In Japan, drivers aged 75 and older are required to undergo a cognitive function test when renewing their driver's licenses.)

The air conditioner’s dehumidifier’s drain hose was blocked. (A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air.)
