56 people have officially entered the race for Tokyo governor. (Each person had to pay three million yen to enter the race.)

The bad smell from cigarette smoke lingered in the room. (Workers outside of her house were smoking.)

Shiso is called perilla in the US. (It is also called perilla mint, beefsteak plant, Chinese basil, wild basil, and rattlesnake weed.)

She is good at sewing, but I’m not. (Me neither.)

The store was closed temporarily. (It was closed for personal reasons.)

Our dogs weren’t spayed. (We didn’t neuter our pets.)

The dogs were in heat for about two weeks. (Her dog was excited to see their neighbor’s dog during this time.)

I attended a disaster preparedness class. (Japanese call this disaster prevention even though disasters cannot be prevented, but we can prepare for them.)

I asked her, “Where are you from?” (I asked her where she was from.)

I will accompany the singer on my shamisen. (I will play the shamisen while she sings.)

I practice between one and three hours a day. (She is preparing for a recital.)

I have calluses on my fingers. (She got hardened skin from playing a stringed instrument.)

“Little” has a negative tone and means hardly any, while “a little” has a positive tone and means some or a small quantity. (“There is little water in the glass” means the glass is almost empty. “There is a little water in the glass” means that there is still water in the glass but not much.)

The dragon flies didn’t protect me from mosquito bites. (We were talking about the dragon statue in Singapore and dragon flies usually help keep mosquitoes away.)

He took an x-ray of my knee. (The x-ray didn’t show any problems.)

Theia was an ancient planet about the size of Mars. (It crashed into Earth about 4.5 billion years ago.)

This caused Earth to tilt about 24 degrees and a part of Theia made Earth’s moon. (If Earth did not tilt at all, there would be no seasons.)
