Words January 2025 Week 1

Sorry - I just noticed that I forgot to post these words last week.

She is a dental hygienist. (She is a dental technician.)

She joined the city brass band. (She has been playing the saxophone since junior high school.)

He has a safe deposit box in the bank. (He keeps important documents in the box.)

He pays an annual fee, and the city takes care of the cemetery. (They weed around the tombs, pick up trash, etc.)

I’ve been as busy as a bee this month. (She has been extremely busy.)

She had a driver’s license, but didn’t drive. (Do not say, ‘She is a paper driver.’”)

They are in their 40s and 50s. (They are forty-something and fifty-something years old.)

“Osechi ryori” was eaten several times a year in the Nara Period. (These original dishes were basically just boiled vegetables.)

The New Year “osechi” became popular in the Imperial Court during the Heian Era. (More delicious foods were added during this time and the custom spread to the common people.)

I wanted to educate them about “osechi” by using puns. (Puns are made by using words with double meanings.)

I used a pressure cooker to cook the black beans. (Pressure cookers shorten the cooking time, but with black beans it still takes many hours to cook.)

I soaked the beans overnight. (This helps to soften the beans.)

Rust from nails has a chemical reaction with the beans, which helps the beans turn dark to a rich black color. (Nails without rust will also be ok but the rust is best.)

He didn’t notify us when he moved. (We weren’t told that he changed living locations.)

My brothers and I weren’t close. (We didn’t communicate much.)

The Monet exhibition was an immersive journey. (An immersive art exhibition is a multi-sensory art experience that uses technology to create a world around the viewer, making them feel like part of the artwork.)

The Sumitomo Building, a.k.a. triangle building, has a triangle courtyard in the center. (From this courtyard, you can look up and see the sky from the center of the building.)

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. (It is difficult to get old people to change their way of thinking.

There was an “À la carte” menu. (Dishes are priced and listed individually, allowing diners to choose their own meal.)
