We lived in the countryside. (We lived outside the city.)

She had a crush on him. (She loved him, but he didn’t know it.)

In the 1800s, “mashed” meant “to be head over heels in love”. (In the early 1900s, the word “crushed” replaced the word “mashed”.)

“Puppy love” refers to the close relationship between a young boy and his dog. (We usually call a teenager’s first love “puppy love.”)

We use “while” for when doing something. (While eating, shopping, writing, etc.)

“During” is followed by a noun such as during the summer, during the week, etc. (It was chilly during my stay in Anacortes.)

The cat had a cancerous tumor. (The vet removed the tumor but said that the 16-year-old cat has only about a year to live.)

They are renovating the house. (They are fixing up the old house they bought so it will be in a good condition.)

She has several yuzu trees in her yard. (Gardens are for flowers and vegetables and trees are in the yard.)

There was a gecko crawling on the door. (Geckos make good pets since they eat live insects including cockroaches.)

My key fob battery died. (This is a device that can unlock and start your car remotely.)

I had the car battery replaced. (She left the interior light on, and it killed, or drained, the battery.)

It is a very elite high school. (Members of the Imperial Family continue to study at Gakushūin.)

Monaco is the most densely populated country with 18,960 people per square kilometer. (Tokyo's population density is 6,100 people per square kilometer and is the world’s most densely populated city.)

The Okutama Ekiden has been held annually since 1936 on the first Sunday of December. (The Hakone Ekiden is the most popular Ekiden in Japan.)
