Words December 2023 Week 1

I wasn’t planning to go to the temple, but my daughter begged me to go. (It was for the 7-5-3 ceremony.)

She was very happy with the ceremony. (Don’t say that she was “satisfied.”)

If you're satisfied, you're contented, and you don't need anything more. (You're not overjoyed, but you're not complaining either.)

The bright sun took away our energy. (The heat from the sun drained our energy.)

It is said that Chinese cabbage doesn’t have many nutrients. (Red cabbage is the most nutritious cabbage.)

It was our ninth junior high school reunion. (Fifty-one classmates and one teacher attended.)

She is energetic. (She is very active.)

I hope that I am as healthy as she is when I am her age. (Her junior high school teacher is now 85 and teaches ballroom dancing.)

Senpai/kohai system originated from Confucianism but is unique to Japan. (This system usually continues throughout their lives.)

The pain was getting worse. (He had a toothache.)

They made “music” by using a stethoscope. (They made a stethoscope into a microphone.)

He won the golf tournament by three strokes. (His score was three points lower than the next person’s score.)

I had a bad cough. (I was coughing a lot.)

She broke water so she will probably give birth today. (When the pregnant mom’s water breaks, it usually means that the baby is on the way.)

I saw river fog the other day. (This is caused by the air being colder than the water.)

It was different than I imagined. (I had a different image.)

The cabbage and ground beef croquettes were popular. (Sounds tasty.)

They were hot and crispy. (They were just out of the oil.)

They were giving out free rhododendrons. (How do you say rhododendron in Japanese?)

We went to a karaoke parlor. (This was part of their reunion.)

I’ve been there twice. (I have been there two times.)

They finally tied the knot. (They finally got married.)

The idiom originated in the 1930's when Wonder Bread was the first pre-sliced loaf of bread. (At that time, there was nothing greater than sliced bread.)

He is always stretching the truth. (He exaggerates.)

The first-place prize is one billion yen. (Don’t say, “the first prize.”)

I’ll probably never buy a lottery ticket. (It has been many years since I bought one.)
