HOCO stands for Homecoming. I will try to explain what the high school homecoming is all about.

The first homecoming event took place in 1910 at the University of Missouri, where they invited former students to attend a football game and participate in various festivities.

High school homecomings started in the 1920s and usually have a week of activities leading up to a football game. Students, alumni, and the local community come together to show their school spirit. The football games are usually held on a Friday evening and the homecoming dance on Saturday evening. This dance is usually semi-formal and the second biggest dance of the schoolyear. (The biggest formal dance, the Senior Prom, is held at the end of the school year.) Anyway…

Marlo had a soccer game yesterday. Her school is ranked 2A and they played a 3A school. 3A schools have more students so it is easier to make a stronger team. Anacortes lost the game by a score of 1-0.

At the end of the game, we noticed a boy holding a small bouquet of flowers and a sign board. We all guessed that he was going to ask one of the soccer players to their school homecoming dance.

To our surprise, and to Marlo’s surprise, he asked her to go to the dance with him. It was a little awkward with so many strangers, family and friends watching. She got home late and went straight to be so we must wait till she gets home tonight to find out how the two of them met.

"I'd be sour" = I'd be sad (There are packs of sour candy attached to the sign board.)

"if you said no HOCO" = If you would not say yes to go to the homecoming dance.
