The giant Easter egg was made to pay tribute to a local artist famous for her painted eggs. Pomerode was colonized by German immigrants, who brought the tradition of painting eggshells for Easter. Coloring eggshells dates back 60,000 years ago as symbols of death and rebirth. The third Saturday in May is International Learn to Swim Day. This day originated to raise awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim. With summer right around the corner, learning to swim is important for water safety. Drowning is the number two cause of deaths for children ages 1 to 14. Teaching children to relax and not panic if they fall into water is most important. “Mum’s the word” means “keep it a secret.” We’re having a surprise birthday party for him, so mum’s the word. “To plug away” means “to keep working on something until finished.” Weeding the garden isn’t easy, but I keep plugging away. |
