My Notes Appril 2025 Week 2

At the age of 108, Shitsui Hakoishi became the world's oldest female barber.

She was born into a family of farmers on 10 November 1916 in Tochigi.

In 1934, at the age of 18, Shitsui passed the barber examination.

When she was 24, she opened her own shop in Tokyo, but it was destroyed during the war.

In 1953, she opened a salon in Nakagawa-machi, and she is working there to this day.

Shitsui said she sticks to "three nevers": never hold a grudge, never be jealous, and never fight with others.

April 9 is Jumbo Day.

Jumbo the Elephant was born around December 25, 1860, in Sudan.

After his mother was killed by poachers, Jumbo was taken to taken to Italy, Germany, France and England.

Jumbo was bought by the P. T. Barnum Circus and arrived in the US on April 9, 1882.

He died after being hit by a train when he was 25 years old.

The word jumbo comes from “onjamba” which means “elephant” in an African language.

“To flip out” means “to get very angry.”

My dad flipped out when I got a speeding ticket.

“Flip side” means “the opposite side.”

The team lost the game, but on the flip side, they got a first-round draft choice.
