They had to enter our main gate and drive several hundred meters to enter their compound which was not far from our barracks. Some of the Ammo troops became friends with some of them. They were invited to some of our BBQs. I was given a Tiger division patch and told that if I was ever in trouble off base to pin the patch to my shirt. One of my friends had to visit the American consulate in Saigon so several of us were given permission to go there. After my friend took care of his business, we decided to sightsee and have a few drinks. We missed our ride back to base. We decided to take a Vietnamese taxi. We had to pass through a couple of checkpoints and pay a small fee at each. Then suddenly the taxi driver said he wouldn’t drive any further because it was too dangerous since the sun would be going down soon. We started walking, hoping to catch a ride from a military vehicle. I always carried theTiger division patch in my pocket. I pinned it to my shoulder and soon a Korean military truck stopping and asked where we were going. They said we were crazy to be out there after sunset. They gave us a ride back to our base. I found out later that they went very far out of their way to take us home. I will never forget them.
