Idioms of the week: Break out in a cold sweat Break it up Lessons October 2024 Week 4 Helen Antenucci is the world’s oldest train operator. 81-year-old Helen operates trains in Boston, Massachusetts. Helen began her career as a train driver in 1995 at the age of 53. She had five daughters and wanted to get out of the house for some peace and quiet. There were only a handful of women train operators when she started, but now about 40 percent of the operators are females. She wants to continue working until she is told to retire. October 31 is National Doorbell Day. In 1817, the first doorbell used compressed air. The first electric doorbell was invented in 1831 but didn’t become popular until the early 1900s. Before doorbells, many houses had door knockers. “Smart doorbells” use an app on your phone or PC to answer the door. “Brains behind something” means “the person who planned and organized something.” The police are looking for the brains behind the bank robbery. “All brawn but no brains” means “a person who is strong but not intelligent.” Many football players were all brawn but no brains. There is a big problem in the US with porch pirates. |
