Idioms of the week:

Get outta here

Keep your chin up

Lessons June 2024 Week 2

A museum in Osaki, Miyagi, displayed the largest number of Japanese swords.

They exhibited 560 katana on June 5, 2023.

Katana originates from sasuga (刺刀) used by lower-ranking samurai during the Kamakura era.

Their main weapon was a long naginata and sasuga was a spare weapon.

Starting around the year 1400, long swords signed with the katana-style mei were made.

The oldest katana in existence today is called Hishizukuri uchigatana, which was forged in the Nanbokuchō period (1336 – 1392).

June 5 is Moonshine Day.

Moonshine is by tradition usually a clear, unaged whiskey made with maize in the United States.

Making moonshine was illegal so it was usually made at night.

Moonshine has a much higher percentage of alcohol than regular whiskey.

If moonshine was not carefully made, it could be poisonous.

“It’s a small world” means “to be surprised when you find out that someone has an unexpected connection to you.”

I met an Air Force captain in Vietnam and his father was my father’s boss. It’s a small world.

“Blow me away” means “to be very impressed by something.

Listening to 100 taiko drums on stage really blew me away.
