Words October 2025 Week 1

An American carton of eggs has 12 eggs, and a Japanese carton has 10. (A carton is a light box or container, typically one made of waxed cardboard or plastic in which drinks or foodstuffs are packaged.)

He is a cross-dresser. (A crossdresser is a person who wears clothing typical of the other sex.)

He had appendicitis. (His appendix burst.)

The donut shop “Donut Society” is located in Hamura, Futabacho. (You can Google “donut society hamura” to find their homepage. They are open on Saturdays and Sundays only from 11 am to 4 pm.)

They serve only two types: sugar coated, or cinnamon sugar coated. (They don’t want to waste food, so they don’t fry the donuts until they are ordered.)

Matsuo Basho is the most read Japanese poet in English and Haruki Murakami is the most read Japanese novelist. (I read the book Norwegian Wood by Murakami.)

To “throw a question” at someone means to “ask a question”, but it is a little strong. (It would be better to simply say “I have a question for all of you.”)

I brought it on our vacation. (You bring something “on” a vacation or trip.)

The guidebook was discontinued and replaced by a new version. (She lost the guidebook that she checked out of a library and had to replace it.)

He never married and has no children. (He is 85 years old and is having health problems.)

A rack of ribs has between 8 and 10 ribs. (Regular spareribs are larger and have more meat than baby back ribs, but baby back ribs are pricier, cook faster and more tender.)

To barter means to exchange goods or services without using money.  (Bartering was most common in ancient times when there was no money.)

To hustle means to do something quickly.  (It also means “fraud” or “scam” or “sagi” in Japanese.)

First, peel the eggplant then cut it lengthwise. (The opposite would be to cut is crosswise.)

Next wrap it with prosciutto. (Prosciutto is usually uncooked because it is cured in salt to remove moisture and with no moisture, bacteria can’t grow.)

Now I am stress-free. (She no longer has stress.)

Preferred lie, a.k.a. “winter rules,” permits players to lift, clean, and place their ball. (You can also move the ball, usually about 6 inches from the original spot, so it is also called the “six-inch” rule.)

Playoffs are extra holes in golf used to break tie scores after playing 72 holes. (They are also called “tiebreaker” holes.)

A divot is a piece of turf cut out of the ground by a golf club when hitting a ball. (Turf is grass including the roots that hold it together.)

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. (This means to restart a person’s heartbeat and breathing.)

AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator, which delivers an electrical shock to restore a normal heartbeat. (Many government facilities have AED for emergencies.)
She got the runaround from the city employees. (Nobody would give her a direct answer to her question.)

He lost his appetite. (He didn’t feel like eating.)

The bones of a deceased person are put into an urn. (An urn looks like a vase.)

There are 45 sumo stables. (A stablemaster manages a stable.)

One in three people in Ome are 65 or older. (About 33 percent of Ome citizens are elderly.)
