Use “which” to add non-essential information to a sentence. (My phone, which is an iPhone, isn’t working.)

Use “that” to add essential information to a sentence. (My phone that I bought last week isn’t working.) (If you have questions about these two words, I can explain more in class.)

That noise irritates me. (It bothers me.) (It is annoying.)

I thought it was a scam. (She thought they were trying to cheat her out of some money.)

Two double-deck green train cars will be added to the Chuo Line rapid train from April 2024. (There will be an additional cost to ride in these cars.)

Marathons are endurance races. (They are not high-speed races.)

After tinkering with the PC, I finally got the internet to work again. (I was working on the computer as an amateur.)

The icon to open the app disappeared. (Icons are small pictures used to open an application.)

It was all you can eat and drink for a set price. (It was not “free drink.”)

A bear injured the lady’s arm. (It is hard for bears to find food, so they are going into areas where people live.)

A foreign couple was walking toward me. (Two foreigners were approaching me.)

I made a reservation for 90 minutes later. (They went to a café at the opening time, but it was completely booked already.)

They thinned the forest by cutting down many small trees. (These trees were used to make wooden toys.)

I tripped on the concrete block. (She almost fell down.)
