Words October 2023 Week 3

They were legally married last week and will have a wedding ceremony in April. (They got married in the city office.)

Her uncle will walk her down the aisle. (Usually the father “gives the bride away.”)

The night light burnt out. (This is the tiny dim light use to see in the room if you wake up at night.)

The sole of my shoe came half off. (Storing your shoes in a very hot room can cause this problem.)

This summer was the hottest on record. (The heat caused many problems, especially with farmers.)

It’s better to be safe than sorry. (The food in the fridge was warm so it was better to throw it away because if they ate it, they might get sick.)

There was nothing wrong with the freezer or vegetable drawer. (They bought a new refrigerator.)

We will have a class reunion in November. (Her junior high school classmates will get together for a party.)

My classmates are very close. (They keep in contact with each other.)

Almost nobody was wearing a mask. (This was in Canada.)

I’m still learning how to use it. (She got a new phone.)

He looks like a Thai now. (He has been teaching in Thailand for about a year.)

The laundromat accepts only coins. (Since the price has gone up, many coin laundries accept “paper money.”)

I got a phone call from the nursing home. (The nursing home called me.)

The doctor said that she won’t be able to walk after the surgery. (She is in her mid-nineties.)

I asked why they didn’t check to see if a bone was broken. (She fell down and was in pain, but they didn’t take x-rays until the next day.)

“Would" is the past tense of verb "will." (I could spend several hours explaining all the uses of “would.”)

I saw the heron up close. (She was standing close to the bird.)

The cosmos flowers are in bloom. (The flowers are blooming.)

Japan had two wins and two losses. (Unfortunately, they couldn’t advance to the top eight teams.)

I found several pronunciations for the word “apartheid.” (In American English we pronounce it “a par tide.”)
