Words October 2023 Week 2

It cost 180,000 yen to tear down the concrete block wall. (They worried that if there was an earthquake, the wall might fall over and hurt of kill someone.)

She will have cataract surgery. (She will see clearly after the surgery.)

We dismantled our family tomb. (The tomb was made shorter so if there is an earthquake, it won’t topple over.)

They re-cremated the ashes from seven urns then combined them into one urn. (I guess the second cremation will make the ashes use less space so they can use only one urn.)

He is the shortest in his class, so we could find him easily. (He stood at the head of the line.)

About 80 people from seven countries took part in the first international “Wanko soba” eating contest. (They had to eat as many small bowls of the noodles as they could in two minutes.)

I walked along the Akigawa River after a long time. (The weather was nice on that day.)

I must attend a two-day fire safety training. (This is a requirement for small businesses.)

He is being treated for shingles. (The treatment should end soon.)

I received the first of two vaccinations for shingles. (Some years ago, I had one vaccination. This new vaccine requires two shots.)

Babies traditionally carry a 1.8 kg mochi on their backs on their first birthday. (This is an old Japanese tradition.)

I bought 60 chestnuts, but ten of them were spoiled. (She will buy more this weekend and tell them about the spoiled ones. I bet the shop will give her ten more to replace the bad ones.)

The building has two observation decks. (This is the National Government building in central Tokyo.)

I bought recap tires. (These are used tires that look like new but are half the price.)

Nonverbal communication is very important. (Eye contact is the most important nonverbal communication.)

There was an assortment of desserts to choose from.  (They had many different choices.)

I felt toasty sitting near the fireplace. (I was warm.)

He was shoplifting rice balls. (He looked like he was stealing them.)

He walked down the supermarket aisle. (Maybe he wanted to hide the items he was trying to steal.)

I answered the phone. (It was an international scam call.)

She passed the test on her fifth try. (Her first teacher wasn’t very good. She changed teachers and now is a judge for naginata competitions all over Japan.)

The classroom is in the basement. (This is in a junior high school gym.)

I am her niece. (Her aunt’s husband’s nephew was also there.)

The cancer is in remission. (This means the symptoms of cancer are gone, but they might return. If there are no symptoms of cancer after five years, the doctor might say you are cured of cancer.)

We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. (Don’t worry about a possible problem until it happens.)

Japan will start selling sake made from trees in 2025. (Different types of trees will make different flavors.)

Japan’s women’s soccer team plays at a very high level. (It is exciting to watch them.)

Emperor Emeritus Akihito, a.k.a. Heisei, visited Showa Memorial Park. (Emperor Emeritus means retired emperor.)

It was the park’s fortieth anniversary. (The park opened 40 years ago.)

He is a doting grandfather. (He loves his grandchildren very much and probably spoils them.)
