Words November 2023 Week 2

Emoticons, or emotional icons, are used to show facial expressions. (Japanese made kaomoji : - ) popular.)

I worried that she would make a fuss. (This means to become angry and complain about something.)

She is very energetic. (She is old but very active.)

The hairs on my arm and neck were standing. (Our hairs stand on end when we are cold, when we are frightened or when we are in awe of something. Her performance was awesome.)

Charades is a game where you have to "act out" a phrase without speaking. (Your team must try to guess what the phrase is.)

Pictionary is a game where your team must guess what you are drawing within one minute. (I’m not good at drawing.)

Objects that painters paint are called “still life.” (For people we say model.)

Unsure, doubtful, and uncertain, are a few of many synonyms for “on the fence.” (There were more than sixty more synonyms, but these three are best.)

I have bad posture. (When we sit or stand, we should keep our backs straight.)

My friend texted me a Halloween greeting. (If you use the software “Line” you can say that “she Lined me.”)

Canned Tokyo air is a gag gift. (It is a useless but interesting gift.)

He was glued to the TV. (He watched several ekidens one after another.)

I don’t subscribe to any newspaper. (I don’t have any newspapers delivered to my house.)

It had been a year since I weighed myself. (She had her weight checked last year.)

The doctor said that I should eat more. (She is underweight.)

Maybe she had a stroke. (A “stroke” is the common name for a “cerebral infarction.”)

The word kudos is a noun so the verb might be “give.” (Give them praise for doing a good job.)

I started a radio exercise group every Thursday at 6:30 a.m. (The neighborhood group has ten members.)

I planted some flower bulbs. (She planted daffodils and tulips.)

They didn’t have a loaner car. (They didn’t have a car that he could use while they were repairing his car.)

Old English brȳdguma (“bridegroom”) comes from brȳd (“bride”) + guma (“man”). (It has nothing to do with grooming dogs.)
