I wonder why I can’t hit the ball well on the course. (If your “thought” is a question, you should say, “I wonder.”)

Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus. (It can be very painful.)

My face was swollen. (The verb tenses are swell, swelled and swollen, but we seldom say “swelled.”)

He is an architect. (He studied architecture.)

The number of electoral votes for each state equals the number of congressmen for the state. (The electoral votes decide who is the next president.)

The acupuncture relieved the pain. (This has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years.)

She tried on two pairs of shoes. (She tried on two shoes means that she tried on one pair of shoes.)

Our condo had a fire drill. (We practiced using a fire extinguisher.)

They could pay for their food with only cash. (McDonald’s computers had an error.)

She told us to take a deep breath, hold it and then breathe out slowly. (They were exercising.)

The Mizuho Town council has 15 members. (Ome City council has 24 members.)

The vegetable stand uses the honor system for paying. (Most people are honest and pay for what they take.)

He was accepted for the job at a school. (He retired from his previous job and was lucky to find a new one.)

She praised my piano playing. (She said that I played the piano very well.)

We are texting each other more now. (They recently had a class reunion.)

She is paralyzed from the waist down. (She must use a wheelchair.)

We live on a fixed income. (They are retired.)

He got a lump sum retirement pay. (They got a large retirement payment one time rather than a small payment monthly.)
