Words March 2024 Week 2

I have a complaint. (“Complain” is a verb and “complaint” is a noun.)

I told him about it. (You can say, “I talked to him about it,” but don’t say, “I said to him about it.”)

He struck out at his first at-bat. (He had an RBI in his second at bat and a home run in his third time up.)

Shohei Ohtani met his wife several years ago, got engaged last year and are married now. (He will introduce her to us when they are ready.)

She checked in at the ENT clinic and then waited in the car. (There were many people with allergies waiting to see the doctor.)

The doctor asked her, “Do you have hay fever?” (The doctor asked her if she had hay fever.)

The movie moved me. (It was an emotional movie.)

The heated mat is 50 cm by 50 cm. (“50 cm x 50 cm” is read “50 cm by 50 cm.”)

He asked if I was claustrophobic. (She was going to have a minor surgery and her face would be covered with a cloth.)

She was my next-door neighbor. (They were neighbors.)

I dropped her off at the group home. (I drove her to the group home.)

I found a shortcut. (She found a faster way to get there.)

Elementary school is also called grade school, primary school, and grammar school. (A.k.a. “shougakko” in Japan.)

I planted daffodil bulbs. (We plant bulbs for daffodils and tulips.)

Bop means to dance; bebop described a type of jazz, and a sock hop was a dance in a gym. (So, the Big Bopper is big and likes to dance.)

Over 220 microbreweries in Japan produce craft beers. (Craft beers use many strange ingredients for taste.)

I vacuum-packed almost two kilograms of plum blossom petals. (The petals will be used to make alcohol.)

There are three main things that make people happy: close relationships, a job or pastime that they love and helping others. (There are many more definitions for happiness.)
