Words March 2024 Week 1

Most of the teeth come in during childhood, but wisdom teeth come in from age 17 to 25. (We start becoming wise from this age.)

What condiments do you like on your hamburger? (I like “the works” – lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayonnaise, and ketchup.)

She had a beehive hairdo. (This hairstyle was popular in the 60s.)

What kinds of flowers do you grow in your garden? (In my garden, mostly pansies.)

There were four of us. (I went there with my aunt, uncle, and cousin.)

The taxi took a shortcut. (He took a shorter route.)

I had a hectic two weeks. (She was very busy for two weeks.)

They had no appetite. (They didn’t feel like eating.)

It was a three-alarm chili. (It was very spicey hot.)

The street was made of cobblestone. (Cobblestone streets originated in the third century and were very popular in the nineteenth century.)

We rode the cable car to the top of the mountain. (You can also say “ropeway” but cable car is more popular.)

Both types of plum blossoms were blooming. (One type was in full bloom and the other type was just starting to bloom.)

We thought the trail was a shortcut. (The trail was a dead-end so they had to walk back to the mail trail.)

Mizuho is extremely pleasant, simple, and peaceful without any dangers, or “nodoka.” (The town of Mizuho was established by the merger of the four villages on November 10, 1940.)

She might have the flu. (Get well soon.)

He made a U-turn. (He had to turn around in the direction that he came from.)

There was rice porridge on the menu. (a.k.a. okayu.)

He made a three-alarm chili. (It was very spicy hot.)

I sneezed a few times. (Achoo!)

I had bloodshot eyes. (There were red lines in the whites of his eyes.)

I hadn’t gone to karaoke for about four years. (She and her friend finally went recently.)

He has strong hay fever symptoms. (He used a box of tissues.)

I had a sore throat, runny nose, sneezing and a bad cough. (Hopefully medicine will get rid of the symptoms.)

I feel horrible after losing. I feel very frustrated. (This is a basic translation of “kuyashii.”)

Molasses is a type of liquid sugar. (I will try a new recipe using this.)

He made a three-alarm chili. (It was a very spicy hot bowl of chili.)

My vocabulary expanded quickly. (She was using newspapers to teach English.)

The vulture is waiting to eat. (I will not describe the photo I saw but it was very sad.)

They made new yen notes to prevent counterfeiting. (That is the good news, but the bad news is that thousands of businesses must change machines that read the old notes.)

It has a nice fragrance. (The tea smells nice.)

He called the farmer a bad name. (We also say, “dirty name.”)

He went to the unemployment office. (An unemployment office helps you find work and also gives you money [between $110 and $500 per week] to live on for about 26 weeks. An employment office only helps you find work.)

Hakuho, now known as stablemaster Miyagino, was given a salary cut over repeated violence to his 22-year-old protege Hokuseiho. (He deserves to be punished.)

Children are told to never talk to strangers. (Talking to strangers is dangerous for children.)

GMO stands for “genetically modified organisms.” (88 percent of scientists say the GMO food is safe, but 37 percent of the population disagrees.)

She’s getting worse day by day. (Her elderly mother is not eating or drinking.)

I used mixed seasonings for the chili. (The package has cumin, salt, pepper, chili powder, etc.)

Seasonings are salt, herbs, or spices added to food to enhance the flavor. (To enhance means to increase.)
