Words January 2024 Week 3

My car is old, but with periodic maintenance and some TLC, I can drive it for many more years. (If I take good care of my old car, I can drive it for a long time.)

I don’t feel my age. (My brain thinks that I am young, but my body disagrees.)

My children and their families stayed at my house for a week so I couldn’t do what I wanted to do. (She wanted to relax amongst other things.)

The actor performed in front of the stage near the audience. (This made the kabuki play more exciting.)

She didn’t believe us. (She thought we were joking or lying.)

I made an appointment to get my seventh COVID vaccination. (I thought this was too soon since the last vaccine was in August or September.)

Try to understand the word’s meaning in context. (Try to understand the meaning on how it is used in a sentence.)

The yuzu tree branches have thorns. (A thorn punctured the skin on my forehead.)

The injection will be given in the operating room. (The injection will be given in the eye.)

I caught the flu from my husband. (The flu is easily spread to other family members.)

His temperature dropped a little. (He took some medicine.)

We had a show-and-tell in class. (She showed us her collection and told us about it.)

Whales eat a lot of krill. (Krill are called “okiami” in Japanese.)

I bought a pair of chopsticks. (Why are they called “chopsticks”?)

It had been a minute since I had been to Asakusa. (It was good timing for her to use this week’s idiom.)

It took over 20 minutes to find a parking spot. (She drove her car to Asakusa.)

Tom Cruise has dyslexia. (It takes him time to read and understand what he reads.)

He is on the volleyball team. (We are “on” teams, not “in” teams.)

I bought it on impulse. (I suddenly decided to buy it without thinking about it.)
