Words April 2024 Week 2

The surgery was postponed. (The doctor wanted to try using medicine instead of surgery.)

They built five prefab houses in my neighborhood. (The houses are made in a factory and then assembled on location very quickly.)

I’m becoming very forgetful. (Me too.)

He is her father-in-law. (He is her husband’s father.)

I washed my hands in a restroom. (Don’t say, “… in the toilet.”)

They carried a portable shrine. (These mini shrines are carried during some festivals.)

I brined the chicken for about three hours. (The brine was made with water, salt, and sugar.)

The word Dutch is the English word for the people and language of the Netherlands.

The word Deutsch is the word the Germans use for themselves and their language. (Dutch means relating to or belonging to the Netherlands, and Deutsch of the people of Germany.)

He is older than me. (I am a little younger than him.)

He wanted to buy a magnifying glass. (He wanted tiny things to look bigger.)

He failed the eye exam for his driver license. (After getting a new pair of glasses he should be able to pass the test.)

She uses a hearing aide. (She is hard of hearing.)

She didn’t think that it was an emergency, so they called a taxi to go to the hospital. (We should use an ambulance only if it is an emergency.)

She is in her 80s. (She is eighty-something years old.)

The food was recalled voluntarily. (The company decided to recall their food to make sure that it was safe to eat.)

We had a memorial service at the temple. (It was the third anniversary of his mother’s death.)

They performed forced sterilization on handicapped people. (This is now illegal.)

There were many rain puddles. (The golf course was drenched in rain.)
