The most common chowders use seafood such as clams, fish or crab.

Corn chowder is popular in the US where corn is the main ingredient rather than clams.

Most chowders use cream or milk, but Manhattan clam chowder has a tomato-based broth.

I always add bacon to my clam chowder for a richer taste.

The word chowder comes from a French word meaning “soup pot.”

“Tongue in cheek” means “you sound serious but are joking.”

The special day “Stay away from Seattle” was tongue in cheek.

“You snooze – you lose” means “if you don’t act quickly, you will lose an opportunity.”

I waited until Monday to buy the computer on sale, but the sale ended on Sunday. You snooze – you lose.
