Lessons February 2024 Week 3

In 1954, Sir Hugh Beaver had an argument about what was Europe’s fastest game bird.

They tried to look it up but couldn’t find a reference book with the answer.

This led to the idea for a book that could be used to settle such arguments.

Sir Hugh Beaver was the managing director of the Guinness Brewery.

The book was handed out to many pubs.

BTW, the fastest bird was the golden piper.

February 10, 2024, is the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year begins on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February.

The first Chinese New Year was celebrated during the Han dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD).

In Chinese mythology, a beast would devour people in the middle of the night.

An old man hung red paper around the village and set off firecrackers to scare the beast away.

In Okinawa, the new year is celebrated on January 1, the first day of the solar year and on the sixteenth day of the Lunar year.

“Break a leg” means “good luck.”

Before going on stage, they told me to break a leg.”

“Water under the bridge” means “forget about something that happened in the past.”

We had a disagreement, but that is water under the bridge, so let’s be friends again.
